The cleaner shelf of your local bike shop has more options than your local pharmacy has for cough medicine. They all claim to do the same thing but most fall short. A lot of these cleaners are watered down so much they’d have a hard time cleaning a bar of soap. After trying most of these cleaners I thought I had finally found my favourite until I was introduced to Zoom concentrated cleaner from Nanotech Environmental.
Washing your bike is more important than you think. Cleaning it properly from day 1 can keep your bike looking like it’s in showroom condition even after hundreds of running hours. A thorough cleaning after every ride also allows you to inspect your bike and keep an eye out for small problems that could escalate and ruin your next ride.
What is Zoom concentrated cleaner?
Zoom concentrated cleaner was developed and is manufactured here in Canada. It is a simple spray on/hose off soap that breaks down and removes dirt from your bike with little to no agitation. It is available in a pre-mixed 1 litre bottle or a concentrated 3.78 litre jug which is one of my favourite features of this product (more on this later). Although Zoom creators were setting out to make the worlds best bike wash, they quickly realized their bike wash could clean a lot more than bikes. I’ve already found it useful not just for my bike, but for my truck, bicycles and even some stained vinyl siding on my house.
I wanted to make sure this test wouldn’t be easy since I was expecting a lot out of this pink fluid. I left some week old mud on my bike and opted not to use the pressure washer to really see how well Zoom can break down the dirt without help. I hosed off the bike first then sprayed it with a decent amount of the Pre-mixed 1L bottle of Zoom. I let it sit for about a minute then proceeded to rinse it off. I was extremely impressed with the results.
The following before and after shots are using a simple garden hose nozzle and no scrubbing of any kind. I also waited until the bike was completely dry before taking the “after” photos since bikes always look cleaner when they’re still wet.
As you can see, the quick wash results are incredible. The whole process took no more than 15 mins and my hands didn’t even get wet until I pushed the bike back in the garage.
Here is why I really love this product. You know I’m cheap and I like any “best bang for buck” scenario. Zoom has changed the way I’ll buy cleaning products from now on. If you like simplicity then just buy the 1L pre-mixed bottle, it should last you a few heavy washes. But if you like value, get the 3.78L concentrated formula. This jug alone will provide you an incredible amount of washes. Also, you can now mix your bottles as you please. Mix a 10:1 for normal situations, 8:1 for heavy cleans and a 20:1 for light cleans.
As I stated above, washing your bike often will keep it looking new and keep you on top of your maintenance. My bike at the time of this cleaning had over 50 hours on it including multiple mud races. As you can see, aside from scratches and dents. It looks pretty damn clean. I can honestly say it did not look this clean before I got my hands on the Zoom concentrated cleaner.
The thing to note is that Zoom concentrated cleaner is NOT a degreaser. It will handle a fair amount of grease/oil, but if your bike looks like a train axle, you’ll want to use a specific engine degreaser before getting to Zoom.
Keeping this in mind. I still wanted to see just how nasty I could get using Zoom cleaner alone. For this I found the ole TTR…I’ll admit, I don’t wash this thing often. It leaks from everywhere and the carb looks like someone threw molasses at it. I sprayed it down with some Zoom and hosed it off to see just how well the Zoom would cut through with just a garden hose.
I can’t recommend this stuff enough. It’s affordable, it’s Canadian and it works! Let us know if you have any questions. If your local shop does not carry this product, tell them they should!
